100 Words: Summer

We should have had Thanksgiving on a day like this, when I am thankful to be living in this tiny house with central air conditioning. I heard it roar to life at five this morning.
Initially, I thought it was hailing. In my dreary state, I imagined the tap, tap of hailstones against my bedroom window. Excited at the prospect of rain, I sat up and moved my curtain aside. I could feel the heat through the double-pane window. I growled into the darkness. The tapping sound was only the click click of the chain on my ceiling fan.

  1. Recently, I told a friend of mine if ourt heatwave keeps up, I'll be looking into getting a swamp cooler. That, in and of itself, is a sad state of affairs.

  2. Swamp coolers are HORRIBLE! They turn your sugar to solid brick and increase mold productivity, and they attract bugs, just like a real swamp.
My grandma has one, and she wonders why she's always sick.

  3. I just had someone explain what a "swamp cooler" was last year. Nessa, they sound dreadful.

I can fully relate to this post, aside from wishing for rain, which we have had in abundance here in Minneapolis. Yesterday had a heat index of over a hundred, something we will repeat for the next several days...

Nice use of the 100 words, Nessa.

  5. WTF is a swamp cooler? It was a really hot day here today (26c is hot here) and I would have loved air con at home. Love the sun but not when its really warm at night. Nice 100 words Nessa.

    1. Swamp Coolers are a great big metal box of misery, that you get tricked into buying because you're "concerned about the environment." Horrible, horrible things.

  6. 31 deg centigrade here in Madeira yesterday + 85% humidity. As luck would have I was in the UK! And it was cold and grey, around 15 d centigrade - but I loved it almost as much as getting back here around noon today when the temp was a respectful 25 d c :) Lovely 100 words Nessa

    1. Thank you, Joe. As lovely as I know Madeira is, I'd go for cold and grey any day. (I should move to Seattle. I don't know why I haven't.)

  7. One of the perks of living in a small hose with no central air is that two air conditioners do the trick for the whole house. :)

    1. I remember last year, in the old house, we had window units. We'd gather there. Good family bonding. Contrary-wise, in the winter, we fought with the dog for a spot by the heater.

  8. It's strange because I've been desperate for sunshine and heat instead of this awful wet British summer we are having and you wish for rain. Maybe we could do a swap?
